Session 6 - Spring 2022 Details

Recommender systems have become increasingly prevalent in digital markets, providing personalized product recommendations to consumers based on their preferences and behavior. However, there are concerns about the impact of these algorithms on market competition and consumer welfare. In this talk, Prof. Giacomo Calzolari, Dean of Research at the European University Institute, will demonstrate how his team's research uses a flexible model of consumer preferences and finds that recommender systems increase market concentration and prices, but also improve the match between consumers and products and reduce search costs. Overall, they often make users better off, but increasing the amount and precision of personal data used by the algorithms may harm consumer welfare.
