CIVICA Applied Data Science Seminar Series

Session 4

Session 4 will take place on Wednesday, 4:00 PM CEST April 21, on Zoom Webinar.

About The Series

The CIVICA Data Science Seminar series is a unique multi-disciplinary series focused on applications and methodologies of data science for the social, political, and economic world.

Session 5 Details

Given the recent proliferation of disinformation online, there has been growing research interest in automatically debunking rumors, false claims, and "fake news". A number of fact-checking initiatives have been launched so far, both manual and automatic, but the whole enterprise remains in a state of crisis: by the time a claim is finally fact-checked, it could have reached millions of users, and the harm caused could hardly be undone.

An arguably more promising direction is to focus on analyzing entire news outlets in advance to uncover how trustworthy they are before we could fact-check the news that will be written. This is how Dr. Preslav Nakov and his colleagues at the Qatar Computing Research Insitute have been able to create the Tanbih news aggregator and Covid-19 disinformation detector platforms, aimimg to limit the impact of "fake news", propaganda and media bias by making users aware of what they are reading. Join us in session 4 of the CIVICA Data Science Seminar Series as Dr. Nakov walks us through his research and experience in building these platforms and how they can help policymakers, and societies combat the plight of fake news in the digital age.
